Official Rules

Version 1.0

In Disc Wars, there are three different modes you can play, with Challenge Mode being the official mode.

Challenge Mode

In Challenge Mode, the player who throws last on a hole imposes a challenge on all other players while remaining exempt.

This gives trailing players a strategic advantage: they throw normally while opponents must follow specific rules.

All other core mechanics, coin counts, turn sequence, and scoring remain consistent with the Disc Wars system.

Victory is by lowest net strokes, with coin play able to shift momentum dramatically from hole to hole.

Components and Game Setup

Each player's Disc Wars Pack consists of 7 total coins, 5 Challenge Coins and 2 Perk Coins along with 1 Challenge Mini Marker that's used to track active coins during gameplay.

Players begin by selecting their coins, with each person bringing 5 Challenge Coins and 2 Perk Coins. No duplicate coins are allowed between players.

The first hole is played normally, though groups may optionally roll a special die to determine a starting challenge.

After Hole 1, the player with the highest score (worst performance) gets first priority to activate coins on Hole 2.

Turn Sequence & Coin Activation

Starting from Hole 2, coin activation follows a specific order. The person who threw last (worst scorer) gets first choice to activate a Challenge Coin.

If they choose not to use a coin, this option passes to the next worst scorer.

When a player activates a Challenge Coin, they become exempt from that challenge while all other players must follow it.

For example, if someone plays a Putter Only challenge, everyone except the activator must use putters for that hole.

To activate a coin, clearly announce your chosen rule and flip the coin in your Mini Marker.

The challenge remains active only for that hole, unless there are other non-conflicting challenges still in effect.

If no player chooses to activate a Challenge Coin, play continues under any existing stacked challenges from previous activations.

Challenge Coins

When activated, the chosen rule applies to designated targets for that hole. Any violation incurs a +2 penalty stroke.

Please see challenge coins above for rules and examples.

Perk Coins

Each Perk Coin can be used once on any throw (maximum one Perk per throw). You may use multiple Perks over the course of a hole if you have throws remaining.

Please see perk coins above for rules and examples.

Challenge Stacking

Multiple challenges can be active on a single hole, with some important rules to keep in mind.

Players are allowed to stack up to two challenges per hole, as long as the rules don't conflict with each other. When a challenge is stacked, both challenges remain active simultaneously.

Here's how it works: After the first player activates a Challenge Coin, another player can add their own challenge on top.

For example, Player 4 might activate a Putter Only challenge, requiring everyone (except Player 4) to use putters. Then Player 3 could stack a Forehand Only challenge, requiring everyone (except Player 3) to throw forehand.

This creates an interesting dynamic where each player has different requirements:

  1. Player 4 (who activated Putter Only) must throw forehand but can use any disc type
  2. Player 3 (who activated Forehand Only) must use putters but can throw however they want
  3. Players 1 and 2 must follow both challenges - throwing putters with forehand motion

Remember that you can't stack challenges that contradict each other, such as Forehand Only and Backhand Only. Choose your stacking strategy wisely!

Special Considerations

Perk Usage: You can only use one Perk Coin per throw, but feel free to use different Perks throughout the same hole.

Star Frames: When the entire group gets a star frame, each player gets to revive one previously used coin.

Halfway Revival: At Hole 10, players can revive coins based on group size: 4-5 players get 1 revive each, 3 players get 2 revives each, and 2 players get 3 revives each. These coins return to your available pool for later use.

Scoring & Winning

Stroke Play: Your final score includes all regular strokes, penalty strokes from violations, and any adjustments from Perk effects.

Lowest Score Wins. In case of a tie, compare total birdies. If still tied, proceed to sudden-death playoff under normal rules (coin activations only allowed if house agrees).

Etiquette & Fair Play

  1. Honesty: Always declare your activations, targets, and penalties openly.
  2. Equipment Check: Make sure your discs meet challenge requirements before teeing off.
  3. Pace: Announce coin plays quickly to keep the game flowing.
  4. Respect: Give others space for uninterrupted throws and putts.
  5. Awareness: Keep track of active challenges—you'll get an automatic penalty if you don't comply.
